What we ordered: For two people, two orders of lamb curry and to drink, one Lion beer and one ginger beer.

Cost: 59 CHF / €61 / $67

Located near the campus of the University of Bern, Curry Legend is a quaint and quiet little spot in Länggasse, one of the nicer districts of Bern, on the back side of the rail station. Walking in is a bit like entering a time capsule, likely of the youth of the owners. It is a bit, ok a lot 1970s in terms of vibes with colorful eastern energy that would not be out of place on the hippie trails of yesteryear.

While the décor was loud, the food was a return to the basics in many ways. Quality ingredients, essentially decent portions of meat, vegetables, legumes and rice. The lamb was cubed rather than fall off the bone, so very easy to eat and rather tasty.

While the dish was billed as lamb curry, the lamb is rather a component of a series of curries consisting of vegetables, yellow lentils, an ample amount of rice and the garnish of a crispy flatbread like a half-moon off to one side. We were also offered a spicy pepper sauce that really went nicely with the lamb and vegetables.

The Sri Lankan lamb curry was, in sum, a well-balanced meal, all spiked with just a bit of curry but not so much to be overpowering nor dominate the baseline ingredients, whether lamb or carrots or yellow lentils. It was a smooth and affordable meal, with rice as the center or base and the various dishes segmented on top.

Washed down with a cold Sri Lankan beer or a ginger beer, it was a quick and cozy bite and easily perfect for students at the nearby university (who get 3 CHF according to the menu). It's convenience, color and food quality make Curry Legend stand out. Overall, we were pleased.

It is also surprising that there are not more Sri Lankan restaurants in Switzerland given the considerable immigration from there to Switzerland. Perhaps there should be, as it would be a nice addition to the Swiss landscape to have healthy, affordable and well-rounded meals with just enough curry to elevate something that might otherwise be rather ordinary.
